Intensive Coronary Care Unit
Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital, a part of Rural Roads Health Services (RRHS) has a six (6) bed Level 2 Advanced Intensive Coronary Care Unit (ICCU). A team of Internal Medicine Physicians, Registered Nurses, Respiratory Therapists, and other support disciplines provide specialized care for patients in the ICCU. The ICCU team provides care for patients who require intensive care following a major health crisis, complicated surgery, or complex medical condition. A patient may be discharged home or transferred to a more appropriate bed when the services of the ICCU are no longer needed.
What to expect upon admission to the ICCU
You will be cared for by a member of our health care team while in the hospital. Registered Nurses provide patient centered care in this area. All other interdisciplinary members will be part of your care plan as needed.
Our team fully supports and encourages patient participation and involvement in decision making at all stages of their hospital stay.
Visiting Your Loved One in the ICCU
You can visit your loved one every day. It’s important for patients to have visits from family and friends. However, visits can sometimes be tiring for patients, so please keep track of your time in the patient’s room. Talk with the nurse to come up with a visiting schedule that’s best for your loved one.
While in the ICCU, please follow these guidelines:
- Be respectful to other patients and visitors
- The ICCU waiting room is available for family members as well as the cafeteria and front lobby for additional space.
- You should talk to a team member before bringing children to the ICCU and talk to the child about the visit beforehand. If the child decides they want to go into the ICCU, prepare them for what they might see, including the machines, what they do, and how the patient might look. Children should be able to follow the same guidelines as adults when visiting in the ICCU.
While you’re in the room with your loved one, please follow these guidelines:
- No more than two visitors can be at the patient’s bedside at a time. The rest of the visitors can wait in the ICCU waiting room (2nd floor), in the main lobby (1st floor) or cafeteria (ground floor).
- If the nurse asks you to leave, please understand that it is in your loved one’s best interest.
- Reassure your loved one of your support and presence.
- Touch and hold your loved one’s hands.
- Talk to your loved one and remind them what day and time it is.
- Bring pictures, newspapers, a TV schedule, or a calendar.
- Respect the privacy of other patients in the ICCU.
- Take home any patient belongings that you can. Space in the ICCU is limited.
- Don’t use your cell phone at the patient’s bedside. Instead, please make calls outside the ICCU. You can make calls from the visitor’s lounge.
Caring for Yourself
Having a relative or friend in the ICCU can be a very stressful experience. It is important that you take care of yourself. Your loved one needs you to be strong and well. The following suggestions may help:
