Our History

Alexandra Hospital, Ingersoll, named in honour of Queen Alexandra, wife of the reigning sovereign of the time, was first formally opened in 1909. The original building was the former palatial home of James Noxon, purchased by the late Dr. Angus McKay and was later promoted by a group of public-spirited men as the community’s route to establishing a hospital. In 1950, the “new” Alexandra Hospital was built in its current location, sparing no expense toward efficiency and service. AHI is currently an accredited 26-bed hospital serving Ingersoll and the surrounding areas. Services include 24/7 Emergency Department, Acute Care, Complex Continuing Care, Diagnostic Services, Occupational and Physiotherapy Services, Ambulatory Clinics, a Diabetes Education Program as well as the Oxford County Cardiac Rehabilitation Program.

In 1925, the Tillsonburg Soldier’s Memorial Hospital was established after a bequest from prominent Tillsonburg resident John Smith intended specifically for the purpose of a hospital. The original hospital also included nurses’ residence. The Ladies Auxiliary that would later become known as the Volunteer Association was established the same year. The name of the hospital was officially changed to Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital (TDMH) in 1950. Through over 100 years of operation, TDMH has seen a number of renovations and adjustments in program offerings. Currently, TDMH is a fully accredited 62-bed hospital. Services include 24/7 Emergency Department, Acute Care, a Transitional Care Unit, Complex Continuing Care, Surgical and Orthopaedic Program, Diagnostic Services, Occupational and Physiotherapy Services, Ambulatory Clinics as well as a Satellite Dialysis Services.

The partnership of AHI and TDMH began years ago, becoming more solidified with the appointment of the first Integrated President and CEO in 2012. In 2014, the AHI and TDMH Boards of Directors entered into a shared services agreement as the two Boards began working more earnestly toward the full integration of the two hospitals. The hospitals have continued this path, fully integrating many departments and the leadership team across the two hospital sites.
